This program is intended for law students and attorneys who are currently representing or are interested in representing death-row inmates in post-conviction proceedings. The program features nationally recognized death penalty experts. It includes (i) a presentation on habeas corpus that is designed for beginners, (ii) a presentation on current trends and issues that is designed for seasoned practitioners, (iii) a review of recent Supreme Court decisions, (iv) a presentation on developing mitigation evidence in post-conviction cases, (v) a presentation on intellectual disability and mental illness in capital cases, and (vi) a presentation on ethics issues in post-conviction litigation. The session will be followed by presentation of the Norman Redlich Capital Defense Distinguished Service and Pro Bono Awards. These awards seek to honor Dean Redlich’s legacy by recognizing those members of the New York bar who have emulated his life-long dedication to challenging the death penalty. The award presentation will be followed by a keynote lecture by Hon. John Gleeson, former U.S. District Judge and now a partner at Debevoise & Plimpton LLP. The program will conclude with a cocktail reception.
